Victorian Bandstand, Weston Park, Sheffield

The derelict Grade II listed bandstand was designed by Sheffield architects Flockton and Gibbs in 1874. As part of the Heritage Lottery funded renovation scheme for the park, this nationally rare example has been restored to create a unique cultural venue and outdoor classroom.

In the original construction the zinc was laid hollow and wired to the wrought ironwork frame. However, by being unsupported the zinc is prone to denting and conservation architects approved the use of timber boarding beneath the zinc to alleviate this problem.

Material: 0.8 gauge natural VM zinc was used, fitted with sliding caps, which is one of the earliest techniques for constructing a zinc roof.

Archive photographs were used to ensure all original detailing was accurately replicated. The work was carried out to English Heritage best practice standards for heritage conservation and restoration.
